Purpose:
To present an unusual case of blindness after taking a veterinary drug
Methods:
A 34-year-old depressed mood man was referred with progressive loss of vision in both eyes following inadvertently ingestion of three 500 mg tablets of Closantel. On fundus examination, left optic disc margin was blurred.
Results:
His bilateral light perception visual acuity showed no response to I.V. erythropoietin 20000 units daily for three days and 1gr intravenous methylprednisolone acetate for three days followed by 1mg/kg oral prednisolone for two weeks. On macular optical coherence tomography (OCT), a disruption in photoreceptors layer in outer retina was seen.
Conclusion:
Destruction of neurosensory retina and visual pathways is related to severe visual loss. This case alerts us about the destructive effect of this drug on humans even in low dosage that necessitates preventive efforts for this morbid side effect.
