Purpose:

To evaluate the factors leading to fine or poor stereopsis in patients with strabismus

Methods:

This was a retrospective study on 259 patients, more than 7 years old, with any type of strabismus who had history of surgical or non-surgical intervention were followed completely. Stereo acuity was measured using Titmus Stereo Fly test.

Results:

From 259 patients ,164 (63%) were male and 95(37%) female with mean age of 10.4±8.9 years. Mean age of onset of deviation in null , poor and fine stereopsis were 15,15 and 27 months respectively(p=0.003).The duration of eye deviation before treatment were 125±111 and 92±80 in null and fine stereopsis respectively(0.02).Poor and null stereopsis were observed in larger angle oh the initial eye deviation(p=0.001) .Improvement of stereopsis after treatment of eye deviation was statistically significant (p=001).Overally, final stereopsis was better in exotropia than in esotropia(p<0.05). DVD was more seen in null stereopsis group than fine stereopsis(p=.006). Final residual deviation was significantly correlated with poor stereopsis (p=.002).). Improvement of stereopsis after treatment of eye deviation was significant (p=001). Fine stereopsis was more common with a history of symmetric surgery(p=.001).

Conclusion:

Residual deviation, early onset of eye deviation ,duration and initial large angle of deviation are main risk factors of final stereopsis in patients with strabismus. Among vertical deviations accompanined by horizontal deviation,DVD are more common in null and poor stereopsis.
