Purpose:
To investigate degradable property of fibrin sealant after encapsulation of human retinal pigment epithelial (hRPE) cells.
Methods:
hRPE cells in the 4th passages were treated with 10%, 20%, and 30% fibrin sealant. Cultivated hRPE cells in 20% fetal bovine serum were considered as control. Cell-fibrin contact was determined by scanning electron microscopy on days 1, 3, and 7.
Results:
RPE cells encapsulated by fibrin sealant created a good cell-fibrin contact in the 1st day. However, the fibrin sealant demonstrated degradation with increasing time and had an inverse correlation with the fibrin sealant concentration (representative image).
Conclusion:
Fibrin sealant is degraded over time after encapsulating hRPE cells. The rate of degradation is inversely related to the fibrin concentration.
